How does the Bengali Calendar work?

The Bengali Calendar follows solar months of the Bangabda era that follow the traditional (Surya Siddhanta) sankranti of West Bengal panjikas; the year begins with Pohela Boishakh in mid April. A month begins the day after the Surya Siddhanta sankranti if the sankranti falls between sunrise and midnight, and a day later if it falls after midnight. This is the rule printed by West Bengal panjikas such as Gupta Press; modern calculation can differ by a day, and Bangladesh uses a separate fixed calendar. Festivals still follow the lunar tithi, so their dates move each year.
