What is Purnima?
Purnima is the full moon tithi, the fifteenth of the Shukla paksha. Several of the year's major festivals fall on it, including Guru Purnima, Raksha Bandhan, Sharad Purnima, Kartika Purnima and Holi. It is a day for Satyanarayana puja, charity, a holy bath (snan and daan) and temple visits.
Why are there two dates for some Purnimas?
The Purnima vrat and the evening worship of the Moon are kept on the day Purnima prevails at moonrise, in the evening. The holy bath and charity are done on the day Purnima prevails at sunrise. When Purnima begins in the afternoon, the vrat falls on the first day and the snan and daan on the next, so this list gives both.
How is the Purnima vrat kept?
- Fast through the day, or take one meal
- Perform Satyanarayana puja or Lakshmi puja in the evening
- Offer arghya to the full Moon at moonrise and then end the fast
- Give food or clothes in charity
