Calculated for Delhi (Indian Standard Time). Dates follow the sunrise rule of Smarta calendars and can differ by a day between cities and traditions. Tithi times are approximate, usually within about 15 minutes of printed panchangs; for a vrata, confirm with your family purohit.
What is Ekadashi?
Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of each lunar fortnight, so it comes twice a month: once in the Shukla (waxing) paksha and once in the Krishna (waning) paksha. It is sacred to Lord Vishnu, and each of the 24 Ekadashis of the year has its own name and story, such as Nirjala, Devshayani and Prabodhini. In a lunar year with an Adhika (extra) month there are 26, the extra two being Padmini and Parama Ekadashi.
How is the Ekadashi fast kept?
- Eat a single light meal on Dashami and avoid grains and beans from Dashami evening
- On Ekadashi, keep a full fast, a water-only fast, or a fruit and milk (phalahar) fast as health and custom allow
- Spend the day in prayer, Vishnu sahasranama, japa and, for many, a night vigil
- Break the fast (parana) the next morning, on Dwadashi, within the parana window
Rice and grains are traditionally avoided on Ekadashi even by those who do not fast. Anyone who is unwell, pregnant or on medication should follow medical advice.
What is the Ekadashi parana time?
Parana is breaking the fast on Dwadashi, the next day. It should be done after sunrise and after Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, preferably in pratahkala (the first fifth of the day) and before Dwadashi ends. When Hari Vasara runs past the morning, parana is done after midday, in the afternoon. The window for each Ekadashi is in the table.
Why do Ekadashi dates sometimes differ between calendars?
This list follows the Smarta rule: Ekadashi is kept on the day it prevails at sunrise, and when Dashami still prevails 96 minutes before sunrise (Arunodaya) and Ekadashi also covers the next sunrise, the fast moves to the next day. Vaishnava and ISKCON calendars apply the Arunodaya rule more strictly and can be a day later. Dates also shift with the city, because sunrise and the tithi timing are local.
