About Ganesh Chaturthi
Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi. Clay idols are installed at home and in public pandals and worshipped for one to eleven days before immersion, most often on Anant Chaturdashi. Public celebrations are especially large in Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
How the timing is decided
Ganesha is installed and worshipped in the midday (madhyahna) period while Chaturthi prevails, as tradition holds he was born at midday. Seeing the moon on this night is traditionally avoided.
What to do
- Install a clay idol and offer 21 durva blades and modakas
- Read the Vinayaka Vratha Katha
- Avoid looking at the moon on Chaturthi night
