How does the Gujarati Calendar work?
The Gujarati Calendar follows amanta lunar months, each ending on Amavasya; the Vikram Samvat year begins on Bestu Varas, the day after Diwali. The months are named Kartak, Magshar, Posh, Maha, Fagan, Chaitra, Vaishakh, Jeth, Ashadh, Shravan, Bhadarvo and Aso. The year starts with Kartak, so Gujarati New Year (Bestu Varas) falls the day after Diwali, while the month boundaries are the same as in the rest of the amanta calendars. Festivals still follow the lunar tithi, so their dates move each year.
