Ujjain follows the North Indian purnimanta calendar. It has long been a centre of Indian astronomy, and the Tropic of Cancer passes close to the city, which is why many traditional panchangs were calculated for Ujjain.
Well-known temples: Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Kal Bhairav Temple, Harsiddhi Mata Temple.
The early-morning Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar is held daily, the Mahakal Sawari procession runs on the Mondays of Shravana, and Ujjain hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela on the Shipra about every twelve years.
Rahu Kalam is a period of about 90 minutes each day that Hindu tradition considers unsuitable for starting new work. It is one of eight equal parts of the daytime, and its position depends on the weekday.
They are other daily periods traditionally avoided for new beginnings. Yamaganda and Gulika are also one eighth of the daytime each, and Durmuhurtam is one or two short muhurtas that vary by weekday.
