How does the Tamil Calendar work?
The Tamil Calendar follows solar months that begin when the Sun enters a new sign; the year begins with Puthandu in mid April. A month begins on the day the Sun enters the next sidereal sign, if it does so before sunset; otherwise it begins the next day. Festivals still follow the lunar tithi, so their dates move each year.
